Finnish success story
ESSER calendar video September: "Finnish track record."
Finland's environmental protection has been recognised as a world leader in numerous international comparisons. One of these is the Environmental Sustainability Index (ESI) compiled on behalf of the World Economic Forum (WEF), in which Finland regularly ranks at the top. Among other things, the country received top marks for the level of environmental administration and legislation as well as for the consideration of environmental protection in all areas of society.
The Finnish paper industry has long been criticised in the past. A large proportion of the paper processed in Europe comes from there. Wrongly so, because:
Finland is the most densely wooded country in Europe. 70 per cent of its surface area is covered with forest. Around 17,000 km2 of this is strictly protected. Finland's forest resources are increasing, as the natural growth of the forests more than compensates for logging.
